The annual (except 2006)AirFest was held at MacDill AFB on March 30-31, 2007. This airshow attracts some of the largest crowds for airshow standards. This year was no exception.
MacDill AFB is home to SOCOM and a refueling wing, and is frequented by large, heavy transports such as the C-17 Globemaster and C-5 Galaxy and a number of differently configured C-130 aircraft.
Static displays this year favored the transports, as there was a C-5 Galaxy opened up for the crowds to visit and walk through, a C-17 also opened up for the crowds. In addition, statics included a Tanker, a C-130, C-130 with ski option, C-130 electronics support, C-130 tanker and KC-130 Spectre Gunship.
The show was a bit of a letdown, however, as frequent pauses in the flying plagued the day. From 2-3pm, there was not a plane to be seen in the sky as the Florida sun baked all in attendance (at least those of us not taking refuge under a wing of a transport.) Combined with harsh ligting conditions from the airport orientation and equipment malfunction, my offering for this airshow is on the light side. I should have a new camera in time for the Sun n Fun fly-in and Air Power Over Hampton Roads shows.
